A playground for the arts

Big skies.
Deep time.
New possibilities.

WHAC imagines ambitious art shaped by this place: appearing in fields, across salt lakes and within the everyday life of the Wheatbelt.

Wongan Hills Arts Co. Ltd. (WHAC) is building a playground for the arts where none existed. Our venue is not a gallery; it is the town site and its visceral surroundings. It is a landscape shaped by big skies, deep time, and an ever-changing display of colour and texture. We don’t just “place” art; we facilitate site-specific interventions.

The Strategy

We work with artists to create sculptures, installations, and sensory experiences informed by the land’s history and its inevitable future. WHAC operates across salt plains, inside discarded buildings, underground, and in the air.

Significance

The landscape known today as Wongan Hills takes its name from Wongan Katta—commonly translated as "talking hills".

For tens of thousands of years, this has been Ballardong and Yued Country: a place of story, movement, knowledge and deep cultural connection. Every hill, waterway and horizon carries a history that reaches far beyond our own.

WHAC is inspired by the idea that landscapes speak. Our work responds to this place with humility, recognising that the oldest stories belong to those who have cared for Country for generations.

As we grow, we are committed to listening, learning and working respectfully with Ballardong and Yued people, ensuring our work honours the enduring connection between Country, culture and community.
